11 Most Strongest Bite Force Animals in the World

A human-biting force is only up to 160 psi, which is enough to break a pistachio shell. But a surprising difference can be seen in the biting force of wild animals, which is more than 200 times that of humans. Although, humans don’t need more powerful bite forces like wild animals. But the same wild animals need a lot. They have to use their astonishing physical strength to fight for their survival, which involves self-defense and food gathering.

In addition to direct measurement, computer software modeling is also used to detect the bite force of these wild animals. Although gathering data on the bite force strength of these hazardous wild animals is not an easy task, yet researchers take risks. The measurement of bite force is called “PSI” e.g., pounds per square inch. In simple words, it is a pound-force per square inch, i.e., one pound-force per square inch of area. The biting strength of an animal is largely dependent on jaw muscles, as well as the jawbone and surface area of the teeth, but it also depends on the size of their prey and their own size.

We have prepared a list in which the world’s most powerful bite force has been included.

11. Alligator Snapping Turtle: 1000 PSI

Because of their archaic appearance, alligator snapping turtles resemble dinosaurs. This is how these turtles earned the moniker “Dinosaur of the Turtle World.” This species of turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in North America and the habitat of the United States. Extremely strong jaws and distinct streaks on the shells are exactly like the alligator’s retail, raised skin. The bites of alligator-snapping turtles can’t be underestimated because their bite force is up to 1000 psi. This force is sufficient to easily cut someone’s finger like a cutter. These turtles are aggressive in nature, and handling them is not an easy task.

10. Royal Bengal Tiger: 1050 PSI

The Royal Bengal tiger is a subspecies of the tiger family, considered the most lethal predator and formidable among all cats in the world, even more, powerful than the king of the jungle, the lion. Their canine teeth may grow up to about 4 inches, which is the largest among other live cats. With a fatal bite force of 1050 psi, these formidable big cats can ban any prey. This efficiency makes them complete solo hunters. With the rich cultural history, abundance, characteristics, and conservation efforts the Royal Bengal Tiger is the national animal of India.  Bengal tigers are now left in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and some parts of Bhutan, and 70 percent of the world’s tiger population is found in India.

09. Spotted Hyena: 1100 PSI

The Hyena is a famous scavenger of African and Asian origins. However, people often think they consume the leftover food of other predators. Hyenas are ruthless, remorseless, and vengeful hunters. They devour their prey alive without killing them. They even chew and swallow the bones of their prey with their powerful jaws. The hyena bite force is 1100 PSI, stronger than that of the King of the Jungle, the Lion, and the lethal Solo Hunter, the Royal Bengal Tiger. However, hyenas believe in pack living and hunting like lions.

08. Bears: 1160 PSI – 1200 PSI

Bears are quite popular among humans, especially among children. Winnie the Pooh and Teddy Bear were proven particularly endearing. But in reality, the polar bear of the Arctic Circle is the only mammal that has often been seen hunting humans. However, other bears seldom attack humans, but a mother bear can be hostile in defending her offspring. Barring the polar bear, all bear teeth are designed to handle both flora and fauna.

The hyper-carnivorous bears have robust teeth and can bite their prey with a force of 1200 PSI while the Grizzly Bear or Brown Bear that inhabits Eurasia and North America, their biting force is 1160 PSI, almost the same as the Polar Bear. With this incredible biting force, they can easily chew bones and thick trees.

07. Gorilla: 1300 PSI

Gorillas are the world’s largest primates, living in Africa. Despite their enormous stature, gorillas are mainly gentle and shy in nature. These primates have got athletic jaws and 2-inch long, sharp canine teeth, and they can produce an incredible biting force of around 1300 psi. Perhaps you might wonder why they need such a powerful biting force just to eat bananas and fruits. Gorillas don’t just eat bananas and fruit. Yes, they like bananas, but their primary diet consists of plants, tree bark, roots, tubers, nuts, and fibrous things that need strong jaws. Gorillas of the Western Lowland like to eat termites, ants, and their larvae. Apart from all these, other animals are terrified of the gorilla’s 2-inch-long canine fangs, which they take full advantage of in self-protection.

06. Jaguar: 1500 PSI

Jaguars are a species of big cats native to America and have the strongest bite force compared to all other big cats. Unlike other cats, jaguars hold their prey’s heads instead of their necks. This unique hunting technique needs strong jaws with powerful bite force, and luckily, the Jaguar has this capability. Their bite force can reach up to 1500 psi and their strong jaws can easily crush a turtle’s shell. By nature, these solo apex predators are solitude-loving. Mother and dependent cubs can be seen together.

05. Hippopotamus: 1825 PSI

The hippopotamus is a semi-aquatic mammal native to Sub-Saharan Africa that is extremely aggressive, even attacking without provocation. Because of their hostile nature, they are considered among Africa’s most dangerous animals. Their weight and their biting force make them extremely dangerous. Hippos are attractive with their short legs and weight of 3200 kg. Hippos are attractive with their short legs and weight of 3200 kg, and their biting force is around 1825 psi, which is the most powerful among all mammals. They have incisors and canines in their mouth. Their canine teeth may grow up to 2 feet in length and are used for both attack and defense purposes. Their canine teeth are the largest among all terrestrial animals, while sperm whales have the world’s largest canine teeth. Hippos feel proud of their canine teeth and take care of them, including frequent sharpening.

04. American Alligator: 2980 PSI

The American alligator is a large crocodile reptile, commonly known as the Gator, and inhabits the marshes, swamps, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes of the Southeast United States. A 13-foot American alligator has a biting force of 2980 psi, and with this force, they can shred their prey into two pieces. Their teeth are designed in such a way that they can easily catch their prey, but they can’t either rip it off or chew it. However, like other crocodiles and alligators, through dead rolls, they shred their prey into small pieces and swallow them. An adult alligator has 75 to 84 teeth, which are always present in their mouth, and new teeth grow to replace the damaged ones. In their entire life, they pass through 2000 to 3000 teeth. The interesting fact is that you can close their mouth with your hands.

03. Saltwater Crocodile: 3700 PSI

The saltwater crocodile originally inhabits saltwater and brackish wetlands. This area extends from the eastern coast of India to Southeast Asia and from the Sundaic region to North Australia and Micronesia. Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptiles in the world as well as the largest in the Crocodilian family. They can reach a length of 20 ft. and have a lethal biting force that reaches up to 3700 PSI. It is a hyper-carnivorous apex predator, and its prey list includes other apex predators.

02. Great White Shark: 4000 PSI

The great white shark is a large species of mackerel shark that may be found on all major coasts of the ocean. In the year 2008, a team of Australian scientists used X-ray sophisticated computer modeling techniques on a shark skull. They estimated a 21-foot great white shark can exert a tremendous bite force of up to 4000 psi. However, the bite force of a shark also depends on its size. The Great White Shark is a notorious predator with 300 sharp teeth, like other sharks. Without their razor-sharp teeth, these giant hunters are like warriors without weapons. And these razor-sharp teeth are used exactly like a knife and fork, e.g., they can catch and shred their prey. These sharks pass through 20,000 teeth in their entire life. These apex predators are notorious for their feeding habits; they devour anything, even those things that they can’t even digest.

01. Nile Crocodile: 5000 PSI

The Nile crocodile is the world’s second-largest reptile that inhabits freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, swamps, and marshlands in Sub-Saharan Africa. An adult Nile crocodile may reach a length of 20 feet and their beating force is up to 5000 psi, which is the highest compared to all other living creatures in the world. They have 64 to 68 sharply pointed, cone-shaped teeth while their jaw muscles are extremely weak and could be easily shut off. The Nile crocodile is an ambush predator that can wait for hours, days, or even weeks, for the right moment to strike. They attack at once on their prey, which reaches within range, and it is next to impossible to escape from their mouth. The prey lists of these aggressive predators include fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

These are the most powerful bite forces creatures living in the world. If any of these animals have surprised you, or if you think other animals should be added to this list, tell us in the comments section.
